The tip of the island, wild and confidential, between the Lilleau des Niges nature reserve and the beaches of La Patache.
The northernmost village on the island, Les Portes-en-Ré cultivates a discreet elegance that has made it the refuge of loyal families, season after season. Here the lanes lined with hollyhocks lead down to the beaches of Trousse-Chemise and La Patache, so dear to Aznavour.
The property market here is scarce and sought after: village houses with bottle-green shutters, villas tucked away among the pines, properties facing the marshes where the migrating birds pass through. Properties here are handed down more often than they are sold, and that is precisely where our knowledge of the village makes the difference.
For a long time Les Portes lived on salt. Facing the Fier d'Ars, the village of the salt workers shipped out its white gold from the marshes that still draw its landscape today. From that period there remain the subtle grid of the salt pans, the sluices and an intimate relationship with the tide that still sets the rhythm of local life.
In the twentieth century the tip of the island became a chosen retreat, without ever giving in to seaside excess: no built-up seafront, but low houses slipped in between the woods and the marshes. That restraint, protected by the nature reserve and by strict planning rules, has become the signature and the value of the village.
The church of Saint-Eutrope, born of a parish created in 1548 and rebuilt at the end of the seventeenth century, watches discreetly over this village at the end of the world.

At the heart of the Fier d'Ars, one of the great bird reserves of the Atlantic seaboard. La Maison du Fier, run with the LPO, tells the story of its birds and its landscapes.
The little wood and the beach immortalised by Charles Aznavour: an intimate shore facing the pertuis Breton, watched over by its lighthouse house of 1875, reopened to the public in 2022.
The beaches at the tip of the island: pale sand, protected dunes and changing light over the mouth of the Fier.
The heart of the village, its market and its shops, and the address of our BARNES office, as close to the ground as an agency can be.
An inland sea between marshes and sandbanks, the kingdom of flat-bottomed sailing boats, shore fishermen and oyster huts.
Hollyhocks, white walls and green shutters: the archetype of Ré, preserved with jealous care by the Portingalais, as the villagers are known.
Life is organised by bicycle, between the market on the place de la Liberté, oyster tastings on the edge of the Fier and swims at La Patache. When summer comes the village fills up without ever losing its discretion: discretion is exactly what people come here for.
As everywhere on the island, year-round life is gaining ground: shops extending their seasons, more permanent residents, active local associations. Les Portes remains a village that lives, not a stage set.
