Kilometres of sandy beaches backed by the dunes, a vineyard and the largest market on the island: the seaside village for food lovers.
Between the ocean to the south and the vines to the north, Le Bois-Plage-en-Ré is the village of simple pleasures: the beach at the end of the dune path, the market under the halls every morning, the cycle paths running off towards the neighbouring villages.
It is also one of the busiest property markets on the island: village houses in the old town, family villas in the neighbourhoods near the beaches, contemporary properties on the edge of the forest. A depth of supply that often makes it the first stop for buyers.
Le Bois was first a village of ploughmen and wine growers, turned towards the interior. Its ocean frontage, long left to the dunes, opened to holidaymakers only in the twentieth century, sheltered by the state forest planted to hold the sands in place.
The farming heritage is still very much alive: it was at Le Bois-Plage that the island wine growers joined forces in their cooperative, which produces the wines, the pineau and the cognac of Ré. The village has kept both of its faces, seaside and rural, and that is where its deeper charm lies.
At the heart of the old town, the church of Tous-les-Saints, rebuilt in 1832 and lit by stained-glass windows from 1962, watches over that double identity.

The largest market on the island, held daily in season: growers, oyster farmers, greengrocers: an institution on Ré.
Kilometres of sand from Les Gollandières to Le Gros Jonc, backed by the protected line of dunes.
The state-owned woodland that shelters the village from the winds, criss-crossed by paths between pines and holm oaks.
The vines of Ré north of the old town and the cooperative cellar of the island wine growers: tastings and tours.
Lanes, small squares and shops around the church: a true village heart, alive all year round.
A crossroads of the island cycle network: Saint-Martin-de-Ré, La Couarde and the beaches a few minutes away.
The local day begins at the market and ends on the beach: in between, a bicycle, a nap under the pines and drinks in the lanes. Summer here is lively, family-minded and generous.
Out of season the village keeps its market, its shops and its schools and, as everywhere on the island, year-round life grows stronger with each passing year.
