The gateway to the island: two beaches, the oyster beds of the pointe de Sablanceaux and the view of the bridge.
The first commune you reach on the island, Rivedoux-Plage occupies the pointe de Sablanceaux, that tongue of land between two seas. The view over the pertuis, the coming and going of the boats and the silhouette of the bridge make up a setting found nowhere else on the island.
The property market here has two faces: village houses and seaside villas on the beach side, contemporary properties on the higher ground looking out to sea. An excellent way into the island, sought after for how easily it is reached.
For a long time no more than a hamlet of Sainte-Marie, Rivedoux gained its independence in the twentieth century, carried by the rise of sea bathing and oyster farming. The seventeenth-century redoubt, facing the pertuis, is a reminder that this strategic headland was first of all a defensive position.
The opening of the bridge in 1988 made it once and for all the gateway to the island, and the first panorama that every visitor discovers: the oyster beds of Sablanceaux, the two beaches and the bell tower in the distance.

The tongue of sand that welcomes you to the island: beaches, oyster beds and a spectacular view from the bridge.
The north beach on the pertuis breton side, the south beach facing La Rochelle: two moods, two aspects, the same sand.
Oyster tastings facing the sea, an institution in Rivedoux, from lunchtime to sunset.
Built in 1674 to Vauban's instructions to lock the entrance to the island, it bears witness to the strategic role of the pointe de Sablanceaux.
Out at sea facing the headland, the white and red silhouette of the lighthouse (1842) has watched over the waters of Rivedoux for close to two centuries.
The great landscape of Rivedoux: the nearly three-kilometre span that links the island to the mainland, magnificent at sunset.
Rivedoux is lived facing the sea: a swim to the north or to the south depending on the wind, oysters at the hut, the market in the morning and a bicycle ride towards Sainte-Marie or La Flotte. La Rochelle, a quarter of an hour away, adds a convenience found nowhere else on the island.
A residential and busy village, Rivedoux is among the communes with the largest year-round population; that permanent life, shared by the whole island, keeps growing stronger here.
